Making sound - dragging a ten year old crate into 2026

by Yara Kleingeld

Rodio is the oldest and most popular Rust Audio library. It turned ten last year! Over all those years Rust and its ecosystem have grown astonishingly. That made it possible to rework Rodio into a more capable, faster, and friendlier crate.

I’ll give a short intro on how computers represent sound. Then we’ll see how to quantify performance in audio’s firmly real-time world and the tooling we built for that. Next I’ll show how that guided us in modernizing Rodio. Finally I’ll demo our work by “replacing” Discord and building the worlds worst digital piano.
